Calis Beach combines a laid-back atmosphere, friendly locals and non-stop sunshine to create a little piece of heaven on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It offers the perfect location for a relaxing holiday and has so charmed previous visitors that many have chosen to make it their home.
Located across the bay from the bustling harbor town of Fethiye, the 6km long sand and shingle beach is cooled through the hot summer months by a gentle breeze. The string of restaurants and bars along the beach front even offer service to your sunbed and if you stay a little longer on the beach you can enjoy one of the breath-taking sunsets for which Calis is famous. If you want to get a bit more active, various water sports are available and it is a particularly good place to windsurf or kitesurf.
Bowlers will be pleased to note that Calis is also the home of Turkey’s first ever flat green bowling club.
Calis is also a favorite site for the Caretta Caretta (loggerhead) turtles which return every year to nest between May and September. Volunteers from various organisations monitor the nests and emerging turtles to ensure as many as possible reach the sea in safety. An area of wetland at the south end of the beach has been designated as a bird sanctuary to ensure the continuing visits of the more than 200 species which have been observed here, many stopping off during their annual migration.
Calis has grown over the last few years with the increase of both Turkish and European tourists, as well as the growing ex-pat population. It now offers a range of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops catering for varying tastes and budgets, but it has managed to maintain both its Turkish flavour and the friendly atmosphere which first attracted people.
