CALIS CARNIVAL PRINCE AND PRINCESS COMPETITION

The search for Calis Carnival’s Prince and Princess is over – two local schoolchildren have now been “crowned” as winners and will lead the Carnival Procession on 7 June in their own decorated float. In addition the two winners will receive prizes of mountain bikes from sponsors Delta Bike and More, and costumes and hair appointments from sponsors Taurean Properties. Their four attendants will also receive costumes.

The Calis Carnival Committee had recently asked local schools to each nominate a boy and a girl, aged between 8 and 14, who they felt were deserving to be crowned Prince and Princess for the Carnival day. The competition was not on looks or academic success but because the child had faced and overcome some difficulty or hardship in their life or had set a good example to their fellow students.

Fourteen nominations were received and last week a number of these students gave a presentation about themselves at Fethiye Cultural Centre. The remainder were visited by the judging panel at their schools. All of the nominees received gifts of school bags and materials.

The result of the competition was announced last Tuesday, at the Cocktail Party launch of Fethiye Tourism Week, by Heidi Yildiz of Taurean Properties.

She said “All of you children are very special and you are all winners as you have been chosen by your schools from thousands of other students. From reading your c.v’s and meeting you, I am sure that the future of Turkey is in good hands. Our decision has been a difficult one but we finally have our Prince and Princess for the day”.

Carnival Prince is 13 year old Mehmet Daban of Akıncı İlköğretim School and the Princess is 13 year old Mihriban Yörük of Patlangıç YİBO and School. The four attendants are Nezahat Uçar, aged 14 of Akıncı İlköğretim School, Fatih Karadon, aged 14 of Patlangıç YİBO and School, 9 year old Cansu Yilmaz of Yunus Nadi İlköğretim School and 7 year old Yalçın Kayışçı also of Yunus Nadi İlköğretim School who is just eligible as he celebrates his 8^th birthday on Carnival Day!

The Carnival Committee would like to thank the schools for their co-operation, the competition sponsors and Tuna and Göksu Çanta, Divrikler and Eray, Ceylan, Kültür, İlkem and Alper Kırtasiye for donating schoolbags and materials.
