GENERAL CARNIVAL ACTIVITIES

Carnival Mascot

In addition to the logo, we feel that the Carnival should have a fun identity that everyone can recognise and relate to and which is personal to Calis. We came up with the idea of a mascot and what better than a Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead) turtle for which Calis is famous.

Tommy Turtle the Carnival Caretta was “born” and this cuddly green giant reptile will now be making guest appearances at all fundraising events and will be an integral part of the carnival parade itself.

LAUNCH PARTY AND FETHIYE TOURISM WEEK

A Carnival Launch Party took place at Sultan's Aqua City on 22 August 2007. This was attended by the Mayor of Fethiye, Belediye officials, the press, television, local business people and residents. The venue was kindly provided free by the owners of the Aquapark and the buffet/drinks donated by Efes, Sevilen and Sultan's Patisserie.

The Carnival Committee were also invited to attend the Cocktail Party launch of Fethiye Belediye’s Tourism Week on 15 April 2008 and to be a main feature of the evening.

Following speeches by the Mayor and Governor of Fethiye and the Tourism Manager, prizes were awarded to the winners of the Carnival Schools Painting Competition and the Prince and Princess and their four attendants were announced.

Committee members also manned a stand advertising the Carnival activities throughout the event and distributed leaflets to the spectators.

The Carnival Committee also participated in the Tourism Week Beach Cleaning Campaign in Calis on 21 April.

Bars, Restaurants and Hotels

We wish to encourage local restaurants, bars and hotels to participate in and to benefit from the event by staging their own entertainment and competitions in the week leading up to Carnival day.

These could include such things as Carnival Quiz Night, Carnival Karaoke King competition, Talent contest, Carnival Barbecue, Turkish dancing and other dance displays and other such events. It is envisaged that they will charge a small entrance fee or a participation fee, which could be donated to the chosen charity.

The Barmen/waiters have proposed an “Iron Man Contest” to include a swim, cycle race and running race and the feasibility of this is being looked into.

We will encourage bars, restaurants, hotels and shops to decorate their premises in preparation for the event day and to provide/sell examples of the varied Turkish cuisine, culture and crafts. We hope staff will dress up on Carnival day in order to add to the Carnival atmosphere.

Other bars, restaurants and businesses outside the area of the procession will be encouraged to participate by entering floats and/or setting up stalls to promote their businesses so that the whole area of Çaliş is included and benefits.

To encourage further participation we intend to provide a trophy and certificates for the best decorated bar/restaurant/hotel/shop. Judging of this will take place in the week preceding the event.
